What brought you to Third Academy?
A former co-worker in the Specialized Autism Services program that I was working in had started working at Third Academy and encouraged me to look at the website. I read Third’s philosophy regarding education and found a connection with my own personal philosophy of healing the mind body and spirit as a holistic approach giving individuals the opportunity to change the way they feel and then act. Healing the heart touched my heart, and still does.
What excites you about special needs education and your assigned class?
Our students have many different gifts and many different challenges. Our multidisciplinary approaches and team teaching help to support each student at their level and for their needs to allow them to be successful. Special needs education pushes me to think outside of the box and to be a keen observer. I have to firstly build strong relationships with our students, then lead by example to build a community of learning that is safe, inclusive, respectful and engaging for students to learn, and grow.
How does Third Academy’s approach complement pedagogical practice?
As I stated above, I first strive to build strong relationships with our students, then lead by example to build a community of learning that is safe, inclusive, respectful, and engaging for students to learn, and grow. Third Academy’s approach fosters an environment of caring for each individual. Each student is unique in their needs, gifts, and how we as teachers support them to reach their goals.
